Science Behind Seikaisuru Kado’s Sansa

Click here to check this post out on my personal website.

Spoiler warning: I’m restricting this post to the functionality of the Sansa, so there really won’t be much discussion about plot points. The warning is here nonetheless.

Seikaisuru Kado has been one of my favorite shows in this season and a lot of it has to do with the sci-fi theme. My favorite feature of the sci-fi genre is the ability to explore the possibilities hidden in the natural world. Kado does this by introducing crazy extra-dimensional objects to solve some of humanity’s problems. I wanted to write about all of them, but I don’t know enough physics to comment on the Wam. The recently introduced Sansa, on the other hand, is a bit of an easier target.

As it’s introduced in the series, the Sansa is an anisotropic tool designed to give humans the ability to sense the anisotropic, which can be thought of as being similar to higher spatial dimensions. As a side effect, humans are able to make full use of their brains, which apparently extends into multiple dimensions.

When I first saw the Sansa, my reaction was that it was a reference to the old myth that humans only use 10% of their brains. If your physical brain is only a part of your true brain, then this idea totally makes sense. Plus, you can add in plenty of other unexplained mental phenomena. For example, you could say that the feeling of déjà vu is caused by rogue memories entering your brain from other dimensions. I think this is where the idea of the Sansa originated.

Now where did the idea of eliminating the need for sleep originate? I suspect it has something to do with the concept of unihemispheric slow-wave sleep. This is something we’ve observed in some species of birds and marine mammals. It’s believed that certain species of birds can enter a state of sleep and continue to react to their environment while flying. There’s still a lot of research to be done in this field, especially about the quality of this type of sleep, but it makes for a good sci-fi story.

I wanted to keep this post restricted to the inspirations for the Sansa because I don’t know how much I can speak to the validity of it (I’m not a sleep expert). I wanted to finish off with a particular question I had about the Sansa, though. The series doesn’t really make it clear if it’s just the human brain that is multi-dimensional. Are the other “selves” contained within your full brain attached to other physical bodies? It’s common for consciousness to be treated as being separate from your physical brain (it’s an idea that I don’t really like if I’m being honest). I wonder if the series is trying to suggest that human consciousness transcends the known universe into other dimensions. Otherwise, it would make more sense for there to be other bodies in these higher dimensions.

Anyway, I hope you found this all interesting. Let me know what you think!

Dimension W Episode 3: Just robot problems

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_04.18_[2016.01.25_06.24.06]

I’m pretty sure everyone looks like that when they get their first paycheck.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_04.50_[2016.01.25_06.24.50]

Blood is used to transport oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, so what exactly are these nanomachines transporting that makes them so similar to blood?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.00_[2016.01.25_06.26.51]

Not gonna lie…my first apartment was smaller than this.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.43_[2016.01.25_06.28.51]

Suuuuuure….

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_08.11_[2016.01.25_06.30.06]

If this is a gas-powered car that should be in a museum, where exactly is he getting the gas? I guess he lives in a gas station that is only supplying one car, but that still has to run out eventually, right? That car doesn’t exactly look fuel-efficient…

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_10.49_[2016.01.25_06.34.41]

I like to think she googled that hand sign on the spot and this is the face when you just learned what sex is.

The camera panning up to these cars probably means they’re about to cause a dangerous situation. Falling over, maybe?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_11.58_[2016.01.25_06.37.32]

Yup…

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_13.21_[2016.01.25_06.39.08]

So coils function like cell phones? Got it. Also, this statement that coils use towers does not explain to me why a coil needs a tower. Do the towers create the same deep connection that the Numbers create? That wouldn’t make sense unless the towers had their own Numbers. My theory would be that the new coils are inactivated unless they transmit their usage data to a nearby tower, but they have all of the capabilities of accessing the fourth dimension on their own. Otherwise, the tower would have to be generating the energy and transmitting it to the coils, which makes no sense.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_14.58_[2016.01.25_06.45.46]

These kids got hurt messing around on your property, so we need to bring you in! Oh police logic…

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_18.52_[2016.01.25_06.50.02]

Wow…that was convenient.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_21.00_[2016.01.25_06.52.12]

Wait…does this mean they’re planning to recruit Kyouma for something?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 03 [720p].mkv_snapshot_22.38_[2016.01.25_06.54.02]

Next week: Murder Bots!

Man, it would be cool to see Loser come back to help out in next week’s episode (which I’m guessing is solving the mystery of the dead guy at the end of this week’s episode). But based on the opening, there’s still another female character that needs to be introduced to the cast, so it’s probably going to involve her (if it’s not just Kyouma and Mira). Still liking the series so far, but I really wish they would stop using the intro that draws the W-axis as an extension of the X-axis…that annoys me every week.

Dimension W Episode 2: What a Loser

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_00.26_[2016.01.17_13.32.39]

Robot working in an auto shop? As long as they don’t have her drinking the oil, we should be good.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_01.28_[2016.01.17_13.25.33]

This is going to be every week? I don’t know if I need the weekly reminder that the fourth dimension is just an extension of the first dimension. Seriously, no one on the team called these guys out on this?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_03.57_[2016.01.17_13.28.04]

Wow…this guy reminds me of Pierre Despereaux from Psych if anyone has watched that series. I think I saw Loser in the opening sequence too, so he might end up being a pretty fun addition to the team!

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_04.06_[2016.01.17_13.28.30]

Wait…what? Okay, this scene is awesome…

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_05.10_[2016.01.17_13.34.30]

You would think the guy might leave some specific instructions for a robot. This is just preparing for a big reveal about his true instructions at the end of the series, right?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_08.24_[2016.01.17_13.38.00]

Is there a reason why it makes sense for her to have the coil hanging around her neck like that? Is it a fashion statement? I feel like she’d be much more inconspicuous as a robot if she hid that under her clothes.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_10.22_[2016.01.17_13.42.15]

Haha this guy is great!

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_11.27_[2016.01.17_13.45.25]

And suddenly…team up! Foreshadowing for the rest of the series?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_12.15_[2016.01.17_13.49.34]

Why do I get the feeling she’s going to go to the exact building where Loser’s son is hiding?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_13.58_[2016.01.17_13.53.26]

So is Loser trying to avenge his wife? If so, why is he stealing art? Maybe the art theft is a cover for his true intentions, explaining why he always fails.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_17.07_[2016.01.17_13.57.56]

Wow…this battle ended quickly. Also, Numbers? Are these supposed to be the “chosen coils” or something?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_18.30_[2016.01.17_13.59.54]

That’s very convincing…

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_19.44_[2016.01.17_14.01.17]

I really don’t like this wording…I don’t even know if it’s the translator’s fault. This line makes it sound like the entire fourth dimension is collapsing, which feels misleading. And it can’t be some other arbitrary dimension collapsing because they wouldn’t have made such a big deal about Dimension W if there were other dimensions available, right? My explanation is something like this: when coils create their connection to the fourth dimension, they create their own distortions in space-time, which is what actually collapsed here.

(Nerd moment) While it was a bit gruesome, the scene with the curator and his robots was very interesting. Are we supposed to believe that the curator pushed and pulled through the fourth dimension into that figure? If we accept that the fourth dimension is actually time, that would mean that the curator from multiple points in time was compressed through the fourth dimension into a single point in time. Kind of cool, right? That would explain why there seemed to be multiple copies of him.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 02 [720p].mkv_snapshot_19.57_[2016.01.17_14.01.37]

Please tell me the 007 numbering was on purpose. Also, why is it a three-digit number? Are there hundreds of these Numbers?

And blonde dude is alive as expected. But all of that aside, was this episode supposed to indicate that this series is going to move away from the Collector daily life towards a brawl with New Tesla? Could be an interesting progression. Looking forward to watching more.

Dimension W First Impressions (1): I guess this is battle robots?

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_06.26_[2016.01.10_15.41.33]

Another interesting one for this season. While I certainly have a hard time buying into the world this series is trying to build, I still found the first episode to be very interesting. First, let’s get the complaints out of the way. The most obvious one is that the W dimension that was drawn on their Cartesian coordinate system was actually just an extension of the x-axis…at least make it look close to real. Additionally, given that the fourth dimension would probably have similar properties to all other dimensions, there’s no good reason why there would be unlimited energy in the fourth dimension without the same possibility existing in the third dimension. It feels like it would be easier to harness the energy in the third dimension since we can…you know…perceive it.

But who cares about all of that science crap? We want to see the badass main character Kyouma Mabuchi beat up some bad guys, right? Well, that’s exactly what we get in this first episode. So far, this guy comes off as Hei from Darker than Black with the appearance of that one samurai guy from that one series, which I can’t really complain about. The question that we have to answer from here, though, is who is this robot girl who is apparently another main character? The series seems to follow her as she attempts to become a Collector (whatever that is) like Kyouma, but we don’t really get too much of an introduction of who she is. Granted, she probably doesn’t even know everything about what she is or why she exists, so I’m willing to give her a free pass.

[HorribleSubs] Dimension W - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_17.20_[2016.01.10_16.19.42]

But, as a whole, the episode was a pretty nice start. I’m curious to see where it goes and I have a lot of questions for which I’m looking forward to finding answers. Like, for example, why does the girl still want to collect illegal coils if she knows her father is dead? Why was the blonde guy shown in the explosion before it pans out to showing the impact to the surrounding area? Does that mean he’s going to survive it somehow? Return as an antagonist, maybe? Or perhaps the most pressing question of all: if the black market is trying to get away with selling these illegal coils, why are they making them so easy to find by marking them with an X?

Music-wise, I’d say this show rates pretty positively. The opening song is very catchy and works with my electronic music preferences (the dance just makes it better). The ending has a really good introduction that I think will be a really good way to end episodes…the transition in this first episode was just so good.

Kekkai Sensen First Impressions (1): What did I just watch?

[HorribleSubs] Kekkai Sensen - 01 [720p].mkv_snapshot_21.17_[2015.04.24_06.47.57]

So this was kind of strange introduction to a show. I’m not even sure I fully understood everything I saw. In a nutshell, this show takes place in a New York City where humans and supernatural beings live alongside each other. The main character, Leonardo Watch, is a seemingly normal human with supernatural “eyes” capable of very strong perception. He’s apparently trying to save his sister with the help of Libra, an organization trying to bring order to the city.

This show seems to not take itself too seriously, trying really hard to just be wacky. It’s interesting, but it might be too “out there”for someone like me to watch. I have a feeling it will just devolve into episodic battles against a new supernatural creature. I’m still searching around to figure out which shows I’m going to stick with for this season, so we’ll see how it goes. Music-wise, I feel like the song played at the ending (assuming it’s actually the opening song) is pretty solid. Also, this show at least gets a good chuckle from me for the random Pacific Rim reference:
