Accel World Episode 4

So, I guess a lot happened this week, mostly in the form of two big reveals. First off, we have the confession of Kuroyukihime. There had only been hints to it before, but this week she suddenly started becoming overly jealous of Haru and Chiyu, what with the shorter cable and the reaction to his being in Chiyu’s room. So why would a confession occur so early in a series? Well, it would have to be because something throws a wrench into the relationship (in this case a car). While the confession was sweet and all (and Haru actually said what he thought instead of being a wimp), I have to pick at it. Yeah, it looks like she’s saying that she admired him as the one with the potential to reach level 10, but it also looked to me like she was saying that she liked him because she saw that he was really good at video games.

With that done, the second big reveal is Taku as Cyan Pile…naturally, that makes sense (I had a big analysis last week about why I thought that was the case). Haru looked up to him too much. That character is only there if Haru is forced to surpass him at some point, so he has to be somehow related to Brain Burst. Big reveals aside, I question the Physical Full Burst function as a whole. Why is it a big deal if a level 9 loses 99% of their points? If I remember correctly, they have to win against five level 9 players to reach level 10, so why do points even matter anymore? Especially since they lose them all if they lose one match.

So why do they save Physical Full Burst? Why not just use it whenever they want? The only thing I can think of is that accelerating the body like that would naturally put a lot of strain on it, but they never really mention this. Anyway, next week will be the fight between Taku and Haru. It will likely have a lot of explanation from Taku (how he’s not as perfect as he seems and blah blah). I like this fight for a simple reason. Haru actually has something to lose if he doesn’t win. In the earlier fights, it didn’t seem like a big deal if he lost, but now there’s actually a reason. Anyways, looking forward to it.

Accel World Episode 3

This week’s episode gives us some more explanation. Mostly about Kuroyukihime being a level 9 character that betrayed the other kings and attempted to reach level 10. Now her identity is blown and she needs Haru’s help to find the person who knows. But is this it? Is that all of her secret? It seems too early for her secret to be fully revealed. We also have that bit with Chiyu…when she’s talking with Haru, you can’t help but feel sorry for her. Haru’s kind of a jerk to her even though she really doesn’t have to be so nice to him. But still…that backdoor that Haru finds at the end of the episode and the scene from the opening sequence with the disappearing friends around her. They make her very suspicious.

Still, I’d like to propose an alternate theory. It’s not very likely because of the opening sequence, but what if Taku is the one that found Kuroyukihime? In the subtitles, she references the pursuer with “she”, but how does she know the gender of the opponent? Did the program tell her? If not, then it could possibly be Taku. A character like him…very suspicious to me. And it’s possible he put the backdoor in Chiyu’s Neuro Linker to keep track of her or something. I may be over-speculating, but Chiyu just seems off to me as an enemy. That being said, I imagine Chiyu and Taku both will either already be Burst Linkers or become Burst Linkers. Either way, we should find out who the culprit is next week…by the looks of the preview, Haru will only gain suspicion from this backdoor and will still have to join the battle with Kuroyukihime to find out for sure.

Top Opening Songs of Spring Season 2012

Alright, so this is basically a list of what I feel are the top 5 songs from this season’s lineup. Purely my opinion…you don’t have to agree, just throwing it out there. Musical taste is a tricky thing. I’ve done the best I can to explain why I like the songs, but sometimes it’s just not that easy. Not sure how long these links will last…sure they’ll all eventually be taken down. I’m looking at these songs purely for music…there’s no influence from the actual video of the opening. Let me know if you want me to try more posts like this.

5. “dots and lines” by You Hitoto feat. Mummy-D from Zetman

First off, we have the Zetman opening. If you look at it, the song seems very off for the type of show Zetman is. You’d expect something more heavy. But as for the song itself, I liked it a lot. The tune is very catchy and none of the voices sound bad. It’s very consistent and it does a good job of moving itself forward.

4. “Feel So Moon” by Unicorn from Uchuu Kyoudai/Space Brothers

Another song where I kinda have to ignore what’s going on in the animation…random rainbows are random. But the song itself sounds really cool. It has a really good rhythm despite how light it is. If I had to point out a problem, though, I’d have to say that the ending sounded a bit weird to me. It sounds like the song is ascending towards some sort of big finish, but it doesn’t really go anywhere. But the intro to the song is amazing…

3. “Tsurezure Monochrome” by Fujifabric from Tsuritama

I don’t know what instrument is playing that tune in the background, but I love it. The guitar and the drums add to it very nicely too. The singer also doesn’t try to push himself too far, even though the song sounds like there are parts where he could. I’m not completely sure if this is the official opening theme for the show because they showed scenes from the episode in the background, but I’d be happy if it was.

2. “Chase the world” by May’n from Accel World

Probably one of the closest songs you’ll get to Jrock in this season. No matter what I think of the show, this song still sounds great (wait…I feel like I’ve said this before with a Sunrise show). It’s very fast-paced, and May’n does the vocals well. The song brings the music strong from the very beginning and keeps it up. The whole song feels like it blazes by in an instant, but it’s a normal-length song.

1. “To the Beginning” by Kalafina from Fate/Zero

Was it ever even a question? Kalafina, drawing the talents of the wonderful composer Yuki Kajiura, never fails to impress me. The whole song seems to…flow. Not sure how to put it. The intro sounds great and the song builds up so nicely. The violin is definitely a nice touch too. I dunno why people think that oath sign was so much better…I’d have a hard time choosing.

Honorable Mention:

“Borderland” by Mami Kawada from Jormungand

“CHOIR JAIL” by Konomi Suzuki from Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

“Now or Never” by Nano from Phi Brain Season 2

Next up, we have some openings that didn’t quite make it on the list, but were pretty close. They deserve to be singled out from the ones I didn’t like:

Sakamichi no Apollon

Finally, we have the songs that just didn’t make the list. These are here for the simple reason that I want you to know which songs I was listening to when I made these decisions (no particular order):

Natsuiro Kiseki

Acchi Kocchi

Shining Hearts

Hiiro no Kakera

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka of the Dead

Saki Achiga-Hen

Medaka Box

Accel World Episode 2

Finally caught up with the pre-air watchers. Alright, so this episode explains more stuff about the Brain Burst program. So…this show is starting to seem very much like an MMORPG with extra angst. The battles had this air of “community” to them, I would say. That whole business of becoming fans of each other based on how they fight and stuff. Kuroyukihime (that name is gonna get annoying to type, I can tell) surely has me interested, though. She hints at a lot of dark secrets and they make me very curious. She mentioned that avatars are created based on what you’re ashamed of, and that her own avatar was particularly hideous…hmm…how intriguing.

So why do I just call it a game with angst? This show lacks the impending doom that you normally see with a video game type of show. You know…the Internet could be dismantled or people could get locked inside the game forever. Stuff like that. The only cost of losing is that…you can’t play anymore. I assume that the author was trying to say something to the effect of “when you expose yourself so much to the Accel World, you become addicted and then the loss of it becomes incredibly frightening”…something like that.

But I haven’t been convinced yet…hopefully the subsequent episodes will help with that. Also, Haru still annoys me. Most of the gamers I know would embrace the challenge of a weak character, but Haru just whines and whines about how weak he is. Also, hit and run tactic to win? Give me a break. Also, why was he complaining about the avatar that Brain Burst made for him? His avatar is a freaking pig. What the heck? Anyways, next episode seems to be some sort of trouble with Kuroyukihime (I’m getting annoyed at this name already). Hopefully, we find out more about her. Also, the ending was great…just like the opening. Good music for the win.

Accel World Episode 1

So I don’t really like the idea of covering two episodes at once, so I didn’t watch the pre-air of this show. I’m a little late to the party, but I’m getting there. Basically, this show follows Arita Haruyuki, basically a loser at school who is constantly bullied and whatnot. It’s set in a futuristic society where everyone has Neuro Linkers that allow them to mess with augmented reality as well as enter a virtual world. Haru meets the Kuroyukihime, the pretty girl in school that everyone idolizes, and she gives him a program that allows him to enter the Accelerated World.

The story starts out pretty .hack-esque, but I can’t be sure until I find out the catch of this Accelerated World (there has to be a catch, of course). I guess I’m still having the same problem I had before I started watching the show. I’m not able to take the show that seriously just because of how comical his character seems. What’s up with the childhood friend Kurashima Chiyuri too? She seems way too attached to him despite how idiotic he is about her kindness. The main heroine (don’t know her real name yet) looks pretty interesting, though. Mayuzumi Takumi seems to be the character that Haru will aspire to become…the sorta cool, strong guy, I guess.

As I’ve said in another post, I’m not a huge fan of a protagonist given a special power unless he really deserves that power. So what qualifies this protagonist for this Burst Link ability? Is it because he’s really good at video games? Is this show supposed to appeal to my escapist view of video games? Maybe it’s working…maybe it isn’t. I can’t really tell. As for the opening theme of this show, it sounded really nice. I’ve only heard two songs from May’n, and I’d say this song was better than the opening for Hidan no Aria, but probably not quite as good as Phi Brain’s opening. I’d say it’s pretty close, though. I’m guessing we’ll get a better explanation of everything next week, after Haru makes it through that battle he’s currently in. I’m also curious to see what Kuroyukihime’s flaws are…I know she has them. I have a bit of a soft spot for stories like this, so I’ll stick with it and see where it goes.
