Darling in the FranXX Episode 2: Sure, why not? Seems like a reasonable way to pilot

Click here to check this post out on my personal website.

I found this episode more interesting because of how things were introduced, but I’m not sure I’m sold on the premise yet. I guess the whole sexual innuendo thing could work out if the show doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m just not convinced that I’ve seen enough goofiness to support that. I think this also goes back to what I was saying last week about being subtle.

I am glad that they addressed the situation with Naomi, though. I was wondering what happened to her. It looks like they took care of her off screen.

I’m a little annoyed about the memory loss aspect. I’m sure I’m just overly curious about what happened in the fight last week. Based on what we saw this week, I can’t imagine what they would need to hide from us. Right?

These names on the screen kinda help. I think they mentioned last week that Hiro gave everyone names, which is pretty evident in this scene. All of the names look like they’re based on each character’s code number.

Yeah, I got nothing.

I liked how proactive Hiro seemed in this episode about getting back into the fight. Still, I’m wondering why Ichigo’s dialogue shows up to him as coming from the face of the Franxx. Is the robot itself talking when this happens?

  1. From what I understand the girls job in the mech is to fuse with it and control it like it was their own body. Once they fuse the face appears on the mech and the girls for all intents and purposes become the mech and its their will and control that makes the mech do everything it does. That is why when the girls talk after they have fused the robot face comes out, at this point they basically are the robot. However controlling the mech takes pretty much all of their effort so they need the help from the male to provide directions and agency to fight effectively. That is why Hiro and Ichigo’s mech stopped working once their link broke down. However as we saw in this episode and was hinted at in episode 1 a girl can take control of the mech an fight by themselves but it is very dangerous and can only be done for a short time.

      1. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think the robots where talking out loud to the outside world. I think it was all over the communication system as that would be the most effective way to communicate inside a squad when they may be separated by several hundred meters during a fight. Also thinking about it one of the reasons I think the robot faces takes over for the girls when they pilot the mech is that their physical bodies are in a sort of “trance” once the girls fuse with the robot, so their eyes would be closed(they instead see through the eyes of the mech) and they are not speaking with their physical mouth. In this case showing the robot face when the girl talks makes a lot of sense as that is more accurately who they are when they talk, instead of showing their faces asleep in a trance.

        1. but if they’re projecting the girls’ expressions on a robot’s face (and not a physical body), it seems like they could easily project it on their own faces. i dont mean to belabor the point, though. it doesnt really bother me and im willing to suspend disbelief while watching.
