Juuni Taisen Episode 5: Can we do the space one next?

So, I have no idea how warranted this is, but I’m starting to get the idea that this series is trying to mess with me. I’ve been convinced from the outset (and still strongly believe) that the deaths in this series will follow zodiac order. However, the series

To reference a discussion from Animegataris, the third episode in a series is where some viewers make a decision on how the rest of the show will go. By the third episode, this series was pretty set in its ways of introducing one of the zodiac animals and then killing that animal off. If changing the script immediately after that third episode point was intentional, I’d say I’m having fun with it so far.

I definitely thought that Monkey was just some crazy outlier last week, but Sheep also manages to survive his exposition episode. I’m still convinced the deaths are in order, which is easily accomplished by killing multiple characters at around the same time in a subsequent episode. But now the pattern is broken, so I can only speculate. We’ll see how far this goes.

As far as the episode itself, Sheep’s story was okay. I don’t mind the idea that he went back to fight because he wanted to spare his grandson from the tournament. I was honestly expecting a cheaper excuse like saying he got bored of his home life. Still, I’m a little disappointed to find out there was a Juuni Taisen on a space station. That sounds pretty cool to watch.

I don’t really know what to make of the reveal that wars are decided with the Juuni Taisen. I mean, it’s not a new concept, and I kinda wonder if it was said too far into the series to really make a difference. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I feel like it doesn’t change the way I view the game.

I do want to say, though, that I really wanted this offhand statement to be true. As it stands, it seems like a cheap gag at a character we know will die. Originally, I was expecting Sheep to die in this episode, so I was hoping he’d set something into motion that would actually mess with the outcome of the game. Just a thought…
